Kalitta's final-round charge of 4788 others was just enough to subdue Grubnic's 4.805. Grubnic, a native of Brisbane, Australia, was the No. 1 qualifier in the eight-car field with a 4657 His stellar qualifying lap made him the second-quickest and second-fastest racer to traverse a quarter-mile dragstrip onward Australian soil.
